Walking Sticks
Walking sticks (and maple leaves) are what got this thing going. Backstory Walking the sugar bush one day I near tripped over a a fallen limb, which normally would be no big deal except for the fact that I suddenly realized "yikes, that's a big ol' piece of Sugar Maple!" Hate to see that wood go to waste (it's only the State Tree!). So now I'm holding a stout limb, freshly fallen, and I look around me as if the first time and see others - some old, some fresh - laying just about everywhere. Long tedious story short: when nature gives you a gift, it behooves you to use it well. The first - and maybe best - use I made of my stout new friends was to learn (and I'm still learnin') how to make a damn fine walking stick. As with any new relationship, there are clumsy fits and starts and there are zen moments too. Lately a folksy kind of whimsy has found its way into some of my walking sticks, but not at the the expense of a good rugged "walksiness," if you know I mean. Call for prices if anything catches your fancy; I'd be happy to do a custom piece as well.
A selection of my walking sticks are also for sale exclusively at
Westwind Potters, at 144 High Street in Harper's Ferry, and at SOURCE, in downtown Shepherdstown. Finally, all of my walking sticks are finished with penetrating oil or spar urethane and include a leather lanyard and a quality rubber cane tip.
